With Halloween just around the corner, many families will be preparing for trick-or-treating, parties and community events. Whether you're taking part in Halloween celebrations or prefer a quiet evening at home, there are a few simple steps everyone can take to stay safe and help keep our neighbourhoods enjoyable for all.

✅ If you're trick-or-treating:

Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult where possible.

Stick to well-lit areas and use recognised footpaths.

Wear bright or reflective clothing and carry a torch to remain visible.

Cross roads safely and avoid using mobile phones whilst walking.

Only visit homes that appear to be participating in Halloween activities.

✅ If you're driving:

Expect more pedestrians, especially children, during the evening.

Slow down in residential areas and take extra care at crossings and junctions.

Be aware that costumes can sometimes reduce a child's visibility.

✅ If you're celebrating at home:

Ensure decorations do not create trip hazards.

Use battery-operated candles where possible instead of naked flames.

Be considerate of neighbours by keeping noise to a reasonable level.

✅ If you're not taking part:

Consider turning off outside lights or displaying a sign to indicate you do not wish to receive trick-or-treaters.

Respect those who choose not to participate and encourage children to only approach welcoming households.

👮 Remember: Acts of anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, vandalism, or nuisance behaviour are not part of Halloween celebrations and may result in police action.
